Gothic art came along with Gothic architecture as part of the Medieval movement that began in the 12th century and lasted until the 16th century with the birth of the renaissance movement. Those who have adopted the Goth culture are generally imaginative and eclectic with these two attributes radiating in the presence of their chosen tattoos. One category of these tattoos is represented by fantasy images of dragons, fairies and other medieval beings. They are usually linked to the fairy-tale world.

The second category that Gothic tattoos covers are those linked to the occult. Images of Wicca, Tarot and Runes including the pentacle, athame or symbols representing the four elements are common. Occult crafts are not necessarily evil, nor do they have to have anything to do with Satanism. Many of these ancient religions were practiced until Christianity chased them underground. Gothic tattoo designs celebrate these images.
