Skull tattoo designs are naturally instinctive. Human minds are trained to recognize faces so looking at a skull automatically allows your brain to connect it with a person. It is easy to associate skulls with death when looking into those deep empty sockets so it is no surprise that it is known around the globe as a symbol of death. Years ago in World War II, the skull was the official Nazi SS insignia so it because a symbol of fear. Bikers and other fearless groups began to use it on tattoos as a symbol to cheat death.

Ancient Pompeii brought about the idea of a crowned skull with a spirit level which is a carpenter’s tool to suggest death as being a leveler. Also, in New Guinea, skulls were always present in the rafters of medicine houses to bring awareness that death surround you in life.

The symbolism of the skull is actually more associated with positive than negative. The skull can represent victory over death or that your soul can triumph and survive death. However, at the same time it can symbolize that the wearer of the tattoo excepts their fate and they are fearless of it.

Additionally, many religious cultures use skull images. Kali, the Indian god is portrayed with skulls and on the Kabbalistic’s life tree, the skull symbolizes rebirth instead of death and it is not mourned but rather celebrated. In Mexico, the celebrations of the “Day of the Dead” use skulls as a reminder that although death is misfortune, it is also liberating.

Many gamblers will choose skull tattoo designs as a type of reversed bad luck charm to bring them good fortune. It is often paired up with dice, cards or other associated symbols.

The well known skull and crossbones has always been a popular tattoo design and although it once represented prison and death, the resurgence of romantic pirate imagery has made the skull and crossbones less frightening.

Skull tattoo designs can represent various things depending on the wearer such as protection, power, strength, overcoming death, getting though a difficult time or a change from a past life.
