The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl With the Dragon TattooFans of Stieg Larsson's Men Who Hate Women may have been concerned about how the Swedish author's novel would translate to the screen, but they needn't have worried. Significant changes to the source material have been made, but director Niels Arden Opley's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as it's now called, is mostly riveting. As the story begins, middle-aged investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) has just been convicted of a bogus charge of libel against a rich and corrupt corporate hotshot when he's unexpectedly offered a most unusual gig. An aging captain of industry named Henrik Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) wants Blomkvist to figure out what happened to Vanger's niece, who disappeared more than 40 years earlier; not only is the old man convinced that she was murdered, but he suspects that another member of his large and rather disagreeable family (which includes several former Nazis) is the culprit. Blomkvist takes the job, which includes spending at least six months on Vanger's isolated island in the middle of winter. But what he doesn't know is that he's being spied on by twentysomething Lisbeth Salander (brilliantly played by Noomi Rapace in a career-making performance), the titular Girl and the possessor of remarkable skills as a sleuth and computer hacker. With her gothlike piercings and all-black clothes, Lisbeth is a vivid character, to say the least. While we don't exactly know the details of her dark past, it's obviously still with her; indeed, she's just been assigned a new "guardian" (like a parole officer) to look after her finances and other matters. We also know that she is not someone to mess with; when the guardian turns out to be a thoroughly vile monster, Lisbeth gets back at him in one of the more satisfying revenge sequences in recent memory. That Lisbeth and Mikael should end up working together, and more, isn't especially surprising. But the horrifying details and depths of depravity they uncover while working on the case (parallels to The Silence of the Lambs are facile but appropriate) definitely are, and Opley does a nice job of keeping it all straight. At more than two and a half hours, the film is long, with its share of grim, graphic, and scary moments, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a winner. --Sam Graham

The Girl Who Played With Fire

The Girl Who Played With FireThe toughest chick in Sweden returns to action in The Girl Who Played with Fire, the second film adaptation of the late author Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy novels. That would be Lisbeth Salander, once again played with quiet, feral intensity by Noomi Rapace. As Larsson's readers and anyone who saw the first film (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, also released in 2010) knows, Lisbeth is small in stature but big trouble for any man who crosses her--after all, this is the woman who set her father on fire after he abused her mother and later, after being released from a mental institution, took extreme revenge on her legal guardian after he brutally assaulted her (those scenes are briefly revisited for the enlightenment of those who missed the earlier film). Also back is investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), Lisbeth's erstwhile lover and partner in solving the Dragon Tattoo mystery. When two of his young colleagues are killed while at work on a story about sex trafficking, followed shortly by the murder of the aforementioned guardian, Salander is the prime suspect. But Mikael is sure of her innocence; in fact, he's convinced she's the next victim, leading to a tangled tale in which Lisbeth learns more about her family and its very dark secrets than she ever wanted to know. The story is compelling, if a bit slow to take shape, and director Daniel Alfredson, taking over for Niels Arden Oplev, skillfully sustains the mystery and tension (there are also doses of nudity and violence, the latter much more graphic than the former). But Lisbeth isn't on screen nearly as much this time, and her relationship with Blomkvist, so central to Dragon Tattoo, is almost an afterthought. Still, The Girl Who Played with Fire will certainly whet fans' appetites for the next installment, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest; and considering the overall class and quality of these Swedish productions, one shudders to think how they'll turn out in the inevitable American versions, the first of which is due in 2011, with Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. --Sam Graham

Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle Vol. 4: Blue Moose [VHS]

Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle Vol. 4: Blue Moose [VHS]Jay Ward's indelible mix of sight gags, groaning puns, over-the-top high and pop cultural allusions, and inspired vocal mimicry soldiers on in this vintage episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle, a touchstone for media satire that still sounds fresh and looks considerably fresher than the series' later syndicated repeats, thanks to a buff-and-polish restoration from the early '70s that cleans up its bright colors and sharp edges. The stars' serialized misadventures for this episode center on "Rue Britannia," the telltale tattoo that would confirm a fortune--and happens to reside on the sole of one Bullwinkle Moose, who has to fend off the dim-bulb sabotage of three teddibly British would-be heirs determined to nab the bounty. Mr. Peabody and Sherman set the Wayback Machine to encounter Cleopatra, Ptolemy, and Julius Caesar, with Caesar a clueless swain, Cleopatra a rather heavy-handed siren, and the outcome rooted in the show's winningly broad humor.

Even during its original network run, the show didn't cost anybody at Disney (who would subsequently snare the video rights) lost sleep over its slapdash animation. But the madcap Ward, his puckish writers, and superb vocal cast of voice-over wizards lobbed their anything-goes fusillade of then timely pop references and silly jokes with breakneck aplomb. It's a sobering testament to our post-literate age that classical literary references that worked for boomers then in grade school now might fly over the heads of their presumably better-educated offspring. Don't let that stop you: If your kids don't get the jokes, you will. --Sam Sutherland

The Stieg Larsson Trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / The Girl Who Played with Fire / The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest) [Blu-ray]The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
It takes a while, but the saga of one of the more fascinating characters put on the page or the screen in recent years comes to a satisfying conclusion with The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, the last installment of the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson's so-called Millennium Trilogy. That character is Lisbeth Salander, the computer-hacking, Goth-loving, dark angel of revenge, played by Noomi Rapace with the same black stare and taciturn charisma that were so riveting in the first two films (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire, both also released in 2010). When we last saw her, Lisbeth was trying to kill her father, a Russian defector and abusive monster; in the process, the girl was seriously wounded by her half-brother, a hulking freak with a strange condition that renders him impervious to physical pain. As the new film opens, all three are still alive, and she's being taken to a hospital to recover while waiting to stand trial for attempted murder. Meanwhile, her champion and erstwhile lover, journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), sets about uncovering the full extent of the conspiracy responsible for (among other crimes) Lisbeth's being sent to an asylum at age 12 while her father was protected by evil forces within the government. This investigation, which puts not only Lisbeth but also Blomkvist and his colleagues in considerable danger, leads to "the Section," a thoroughly repellent bunch of aging liars, killers, thieves, and perverts with a great many secrets they'd like to keep (the oily Dr. Peter Teleborian, who was responsible for Lisbeth's "treatment" as a child, emerges as the most vile antagonist since the guardian who brutally assaulted her in the first film). Although much of the exhaustive detail about these and other matters has been eliminated by director Daniel Alfredson (who also helmed The Girl Who Played with Fire) and screenwriters Jonas Frykberg and Ulf Ryberg for the purpose of adapting the novel to the screen, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest is still quite long (148 minutes), and less kinetic and violent than the earlier films; there are some exciting sequences, but Lisbeth, previously an unlikely but magnetic action heroine, is seen mostly on a hospital bed or in a courtroom, and much of the film is spent on procedural matters. Still, the fact that the loose ends are wrapped up in fairly conventional fashion doesn't make the conclusion any less satisfying. In fact, the only real letdown comes from knowing that we won't get to see Noomi Rapace play Lisbeth Salander again. --Sam Graham

Star Tattoo Designs

Star tattoo designs are equally as popular and meaningful for men and women. There are a number of variations of these types of tattoos that all have their own metaphysical or symbolic meaning. The star is one of the first significant images and oldest symbols in many religions and they have always been quite awe inspiring as they are things that humans have no control over. Before modern times, people would look to the sky as guidance and they hold an important value in many mythological stories.

Sailors are believed to be the first group of people to put a meaning behind and get nautical star tattoos. Sailors were and still are superstitious and have always looked to the skies to seek out the North Star to find their way home. GPS was non-existent but if a sailor could determine direction by the stars then he could steer his ship the right way. The North Star became a significant symbol so sailors would get a nautical star tattoo for good luck to find their way home.

Various groups of people have adopted the star as their significant symbol. Of course, sailors are still smitten with the traditionalism of the nautical star but so are certain divisions of the military. Many military personnel choose a star tattoo as the superstitious belief that it wilt guide them home.

Of course star tattoo designs can be a symbol of just finding your way in life. This meaning was offered by Sailor Jerry, one of the most well known tattoo artists and the idea was endorsed by the punk movement. Many alternative band members have sleeve tattoos with nautical stars incorporated somewhere in them, often on the elbow.

Shooting Stars – These are usually associated with a specific time in one’s life that has left a lasting impression which could be a special event, a person, a romance or anyone or anything that has made an impact on the individual’s life.

Swallow Tattoo Designs

Sample Swallow Tattoo

Swallow tattoo designs have been worn for many centuries to symbolize health, loyalty, wealth and long travels. These charming little birds are usually worn on the shoulder, upper arm, chest and hip, often paired up with flowers, stars or a banner with some type of words or a significant date.

Before modern technology and the privilege of GPS devices, sailors looked at swallows as a sign that they were close to land. Swallow tattoo designs became a popular symbol to suggest that they would return home safely. The origin can be traced back to a ship that was named “The Swallow.” This ship at one point had a mutiny so to recognize each other, the original seven creators of the mutiny had swallows tattooed on each of their chests.

Interestingly, it is a fact that a swallow will return to its original home every year regardless of where it migrates to. They are also a bird that chooses their mate for life so they are a representation of true love as well as extreme loyalty to their family. Additionally, sailors would wear them to symbolize returning to their home after a struggle, a survived hardship and a victory.

Later, swallow tattoo designs were worn as a symbol by experienced sailors to show off how much sailing experience that they had. Traditionally, a sailor would receive a new swallow tattoo after every 5,000 nautical miles that they clocked.

Back then, it was very dangerous to travel long distances over the sea so sailors that had a couple of swallow tattoo designs were considered quite experienced and therefore incredibly valuable and trustworthy. Legend says that if a sailor had the misfortune of not surviving his travel at sea, the swallows that were tattooed on his body would carry his soul to heaven.

Sailors also received swallow tattoo designs after they completed sailing all seven of the seas and after sailing around both of the horns, which were considered South America and Africa. They would also, as a superstition, receive on swallow tattoo before they went on a trip across the equator and then another one after they arrived safely back home again.

According to some cultures, to see the first swallow in spring is suppose to be an omen of great financial success for the coming year. To guarantee your wealth for the year, you must rub together two coins while you are observing the bird.

Many people choose a tattoo consisting of two swallows. This is a representation of freedom. These types of swallow tattoo designs are common to see on people that have recently gotten out of a bad relationship or prison. Looking further at the prison aspect, the swallow, along with the sparrow and bluebird were also used as a symbol of white supremacy for inmates. They are also commonly worn with various gangs and in the United Kingdom, wearing swallow tattoo designs on your fists means that you are an exceptional fighter.

Swallow tattoo designs are also a popular choice for those looking for old-school tattoos. They are a top pick along with nautical stars, cherries and any other retro tattoo designs.

Although through the years, swallow tattoo designs have been placed primarily on the chest, shoulder and arm, it is now quite common to see one on each side of the chest, two flying on the lower abdomen or two facing each other on the lower back. They are often a tattoo that is created in vibrant shades of red, blue, yellow and green however, you can choose any color for yours that represents your personality.

Tribal swallow tattoo designs have exploded with popularity as well. These are ideal for those that wish to wear such a symbolic bird, yet are not really into all of that color. The black sharp lines on swallow tattoo designs are a stunning choice that not only looks good on any skin tone but also in any size.

Christina Applegate – Actress has her swallows on her lower left part of her abdomen.Justin Chambers – Actor wears his swallow on his side.Marianne Faithful – Singer shows off her swallow on her left hand.Ed Witt – Chef has two swallow tattoo designs.Robbie Williams – Actor displays two swallows on his abdomen.Mark McGrath – Sugar Ray vocalist has a blue swallow on his left should and a red one on the other shoulder.Rachel Perry – VH1 host wears two swallows on her abdomen.Johnny Depp – Actor has a swallow on his right arm

Dragon tattoo designs are a remarkable choice for body art because they are fluid and sinuous.  Since they have no corners or sharp edges, they are ideal to contour to or wrap around any body part.  Traditionally, the dragon is a symbol of danger or power but every dragon has its own representation in cultural myths.

Dragons have always been an object of fascination and curiosity.  Often on a man, dragon tattoo designs symbolize protection or power since men have always been considered a guardian of family and society due to dragons often representing wisdom and guardianship.  Dragon tattoo designs on women usually signify the beginning of new life, reserved strength and grace.

Cultures have captured the image of the dragon in many ways through the years.  Vikings used to carve a dragon onto their ship’s prow as they had a strong belief that the dragon was able to grant them phenomenal supernatural sight.

Chinese emperors truly believed that dragons existed and that they were actually the sons of gods.  The Emperor’s chair was called the dragon’s seat while his robes were called dragon robes.

English dragons were dangerous and destructive, often being slain by brave knights in legends while in Russia, they were described as being monsters with seven tails and three heads.  Additionally, the rainbow-colored African dragon was good and Nana-Buluka’s companion.  This particular dragon is often characterized enveloping the Earth in a circle, holding its tail in its mouth.

Mesopotamian dragons represented knowledge and they were guardians of treasures while Sumerian dragons were devious and cunning.  Babylonian dragons were so powerful that it was believed that they assisted in the world’s creation.

Chinese dragons remain a symbol of power and imperial strength and are often depicted with five claws while Japanese dragons have four claws and a a representation of a caring father and husband.  It is also interesting to note that Japanese dragons have one less toe because they lost it from flying so much further during their travel to arrive at Japan.

The dragon’s legends are always cloaked in mystery and magic and depicted as free and powerful.  They are derived from the bottoms of the oceans and the tops of mountains and are extremely intelligent and evolved creatures.  There are basically three different types of dragon tattoo designs being Western, Easter and Tribal.

Western Dragons – These dragons were evil creatures who destroyed villages and stole and guarded hoards of great treasure.  In tattoos, these types of dragons are a classic choice, representing freedom and great power.

Eastern Dragons – These dragons were ancient, kind, good and intelligent.  These are the Japanese and Chinese dragons and they display no wings yet mysteriously they have the ability to fly.  They represent good, knowledge ad mystery.

Tribal Dragons – These dragon tattoo designs are a symbolic representation of personality and inner feelings.  This dragon symbolizes freedom and physical prowess as well as a connection with nature.  Tribal dragons can mean something different to every person that displays them.

There are a plethora of meanings behind snake tattoo designs.  This is an animal who’s history is spoken of since the Garden of Eden and has continued to represent either good or evil depending on culture and religion.  Snakes symbolize a regenerative nature of life, both positive and negative and have been used as various religious rites and symbols representing anything from healing to wisdom.

The idea of snake tattoo designs representing wisdom can be traced back through many historic events and myths.  Ancient civilizations tell legends of snakes creating the planets.  In Egypt, around 1600 BC, the myth of Ouroboros emerged.  This enormous serpent is depicted as swallowing its own tail, was able to survive through devouring itself, representing an unending cycle of renewal.  The idea of this symbolic infinity continues to be appreciated by those that wear the Ouroboros tattoo.

Artemis, the goddess of the moon, in Greek mythology was often associated with a serpent.  When used as a female symbol, it can bring knowledge to those around and in many cultures, the snake is considered the goddess of birth, death and mystery.  There are even snake cults in India that worship her as the goddess of prophecy and fertility.  Also, in America, there have always been myths about snake people that live underground that help humans still living on earth and work as guardians in the next world.  Most of these myths were created through observation since snakes are known to hibernate under the ground and they are renewed by shedding their skin.

The Cobra and the Rattlesnake are considered the most sacred and the most poisonous, primarily, the King Cobra who is considered the world’s largest venomous snake.  India considers the Cobra a sacred symbol of power and it is believed that it shelters the sun from Buddha while he sleeps.  Also, some believe if a Cobra lives near your residence it is a good omen, while Egyptians associate the snake with the afterlife since Cleopatra used a Cobra’s venom to kill herself.

According to beliefs of Native Americans, the rattlesnake is a symbol of fertility and potency.  Since it strikes as quick as a bolt of lightening it is given an association with rain and is thought of as a male symbol of creation.  Of course, since its venom can cause death, it is also a sign of transformation and death.  Since the rattlesnake engages in the respectful act of rattling its tail as a warning before it strikes, it is said to also represent courage.

People that follow the Chinese zodiac, that are born under the snake sign will often choose snake tattoo designs to show off their trait characteristics, similar to those that wear zodiac tattoo designs.  Those that are considered a snake sign are believed to be charming and wise, romantic and intuitive but also are prone to vanity and sloth.

The snake’s unbelievable ability to shed its own skin has come to represent immortality and rebirth in snake tattoo designs.  They symbolize both natural and supernatural power, wisdom, regeneration and fertility.  They are also considered a representation of female sexual power and temptation.

When snake tattoo designs were chose as a totem, they were to grant the wearer wisdom, stealth or craftiness.  It was always seen as a direct link of the animal’s qualities and the tattoo bearer.

Aside from the obvious flexibility of being able to create snake tattoo designs on virtually any part of your body, curved or not, they are also a top pick because there are so many types to choose from.

Cobra – The most easily recognized snake due to its large hood that it creates when it is alert.  A Cobra can rise up to be 18 feet tall when it is threatened and is the only snake that can spit its poison.  The Cobra symbolizes strength, royalty and authority.

Eye Tattoo Designs

Sample Eye Tattoo

Although eye tattoo designs come in many different forms, they have primarily stemmed from the Egyptian sky god, Horus who was depicted as having a falcon’s head. Horus’ mother was a matriarchal magician named Iris and his father was Osiris, one of the greatest gods.

Horus’ brother Seth, murdered their father Osiris which caused a fight between Horus and Seth for their father’s throne. The fight was eventually won by Horus but he lost his left eye over it. Now it was believed that his left eye was the moon’s eye while his right eye was the sun’s eye. Thoth, a mighty god, later restored Horus’ left eye that he had lost. This left eye was later used as a amulet to bring his father back to life.

Since then, this mighty eye of Horus has been worn in eye tattoo designs for its protective powers as well as its healing results. This symbol can be traced back to being used from 2300 BC. It is a symbol that has the power to protect you from darkness and keep away evil spirits. The Eye of Horus tattoo is almost always done in all black and can be put on any part of the body, even somewhere as small as your wrist.

Many people have always held a fascination to the eye since it is said to be a doorway to the soul. A wide variety of emotion can be conveyed through the eyes including happiness, sadness, anger and love without even seeing the rest of the race. It is also not uncommon to see eye tattoo designs added to some other type of symbol such as wings and butterflies.

While the Eye of Horus is a representation of protection and life, the third eye is a symbol of awareness. Depending on the tattoo, they can be all black or insanely colorful. Placement of eye tattoo designs also hold a bit of symbolic meaning as well. The most popular choice being, the back to symbolize awareness of the wearer’s surroundings. It is common to see one eye at the nape of the wearer’s neck that can be seen above the shirt line or for women, the lower back is a popular pick. Eye tattoo designs that are done exceptionally well will present a symbolic and artistic picture.

This is one of the more powerful eye tattoo designs and worn by those that are incredibly superstitious. The Hand of Fatima, or daughter of Muhammad, is depicted as a tattoo of a hand with an eye on the palm. Muslims believed that this image would act as a protection against the evil eye which was a symbol of a fabled curse that brought about bad luck, sickness and death. This Hand of Fatima not only appears on tattoos but also in amulets, magical charms and in many cultures it is painted near the door of a home to keep the dwellers protected inside.

These are the most difficult eye tattoo designs and should only be attempted by a very skilled and experienced artist. Most often they are on a face but then sometimes the tattoo is just the eyes of someone, often the wearer’s. They are always realistic looking and phenomenal pieces of art.

Unrealistic Eye Tattoos – These are fun, colorful, unique eye tattoos that are often cartoon-like or representative of monsters of some sort.Winged Eye Tattoos – It is very common to see either a realistic or an unrealistic eye tattoo with wings extended from it.Butterfly Eye Tattoos – Many people enjoy the abstract art of incorporating eyes on their butterfly tattoos, usually on the wings.Asia Argento – Model and actress has an eye tattoo on her upper back.Brandon Boyd – Singer wears his eye tattoo in the middle of his upper back.Ville Valo – HIM vocalist displays very large eyes of Edgar Allan Poe on his back.

Rose tattoo designs have been the most popular flower chosen to be displayed on both women and men. They are a flower that is known, loved, appreciated and respected all over the world. Roses have been used for tattoos almost as far back as the practice of tattoo itself. It is a strong enough flower to stand alone as a solitary tattoo, yet gentle and adapting enough to be paired with other symbols, flowers, crosses, words and virtually anything else.

In the East, the lotus and the rose share the meaning of true love. It was believed by the ancient Greeks that the rose only came in white and then it turned red when Aphrodite, the goddess of love pricked her finger on a thorn and her blood flowed, staining the blossoms.

Persia was the first place to grow the rose plant and it was actually thought of as a masculine flower. Over thousands of years it became cultivated in many beautiful varieties and colors. Rose tattoos are found on an equal number of men and women. In the 1940s, a rose tattoo was the most popular tattoo by sailors to honor their girlfriend or wife that they had left behind when they went out to sea.

Rose tattoo designs commonly are a representation of inner and outer beauty. It is interesting to note that if thorns are displayed on the rose tattoo, it is to mean that the individual does not place an emphasis on outer beauty. Others believe that the rose represents everlasting beauty and if it has a thorn then it means that although you can look, you cannot touch.

Dragonfly tattoo designs can have various meanings symbolizing anything from positive change, rebirth and happiness to dark meanings such as evil or a sign of the devil.  This is because their symbolic meaning has changed through the years and they hold their own different interpretation in many cultures.  Symbolically, there may not a more powerful creature in the world.

In Europe, dragonflies were seen as sinister and were often called the devil’s darning needle.  Many cultures have linked the horse with the dragonfly and in Romanian folktale it is said that this flying insect was once a horse that the devil possessed. Swedish folklore suggests that dragonflies were responsible for weighing souls for the devil and other stories tell how trolls use them like spindles to weave clothes.

Dragonflies are also associated with snakes in many cultures.  Folk tales were created in Southern portions of the United States stating that they follow around snakes to stitch them back together when they get injured.

However, the dragonfly is not evil in all cultures.  Native Americans connect this fluttering insect with activity and swiftness.  To the tribes, the dragonfly also is a symbol of renewal after a great hardship has been endured.  It is this representation why dragonfly tattoo designs most often are worn to symbolize a personal reflection of the past and strength of moving forward, especially after getting through anguish and pain.

In Japan, dragonflies represent courage, happiness and strength.  Their beliefs are similar to the Native American’s as far as moving on after hardship.  Having the courage to do so symbolizes your strength to embrace happiness.

The main symbolism of dragonfly tattoo designs are positive force, power of life, renewal and a strong sense of one’s self that can only come with maturity.  Dragonflies are creatures of wind so it only makes sense that they would represent change.  The way that they skim across water surfaces represents one’s deeper thoughts surfacing.  The dragonfly symbol reminds you that when your deeper thoughts rise, you have to pay attention to what is also below the surface.

The colors of a dragonfly are a direct result of them reflecting light so naturally they are associated with illusions, being only what they allow you to see.  Dragonfly tattoo designs can symbolize that mankind is made of light and has the ability to reflect light.  They represent moving beyond self-created illusions that often limit one’s growing and changing.

The  most popular symbolism of dragonfly tattoo designs is the strong sense of self.  This can only come with maturity and similar to butterflies, this offers the meaning of change.  Dragonflies are creatures that are generally appreciated as one looks deeper at their life.

Dragonfly tattoo designs really began to see a sudden rise in popularity near the end of the 90s.  As more women started getting their first tattoos and learning about the meaning of this mystical creature, they became a popular sign of strength and change.

Technically speaking, a dragonfly spends a great majority of its life, sometimes many years, in they nymph stage where it lives in the water and waits for its time to transition to an adult.  The nymph goes through a lot of pain to reach this adult stage of its life.  It climbs out of the water and finds a place on a plant, leaf or stem to rest and then the skin begins to split.  The head emerges with the rest of its body following until it is completely free of its old body which can take several hours.  It then stays there, allowing its wings to dry and prepares for flight that can take a few more days.  This symbolizes a person spending a great portion of their life in a certain stage and then going through a great amount of pain to get to a better place in their life.

Just because dragonfly tattoo designs have become so popular for women, does not mean that they are exclusive to that sex.  In fact, in Native American astrology, it is believed that every person has their own totem animal spirit that acts as their personal guardian to help guide them through various phases in their life.  The dragonfly is one of these totem spirits.  This spirit means that you really need to make the conscious effort to express your dreams, hopes, wishes and needs.

Its spirit is the message of wisdom, winds of change and a way to communicate with the elemental world.  It reminds you to examine habits in your life that need changing and it is there to guide you with your pathway of transformation.

Gecko Tattoo Designs

Gecko tattoo designs are the most common lizards used in body art.  They are small to medium-sized lizards that are found around the world in warm climates.  There are around 2,000 gecko species and what makes them more interesting than other types of lizards are the unique, social chirping sounds that they will make with other geckos.

The history of gecko tattoo designs can be accredited to the Polynesian islands including Samoa, Easter island, Tonga, Cook islands, Tahiti, French Polynesia and of course, Hawaii.  The Polynesians believe that the gecko has supernatural powers so it is as much admired as it is feared.  Myth says that if a green gecko happens to laugh in your direction it is a sign of bad fortune and illness.  The gecko has the ability to lose its tail to escape away from danger so it also represents self-protection and the principles of letting go.

The Polynesian islands were discovered in 1500 but it wasn’t for a few more centuries that they started really receiving a lot of attention.  Even the simple word of “tattoo” is believed to have derived from this area.  There are basically two types of tattoos from these tribes being either Enata or Etua.  Enata would be a natural type of design that would symbolize your life, work, social level, island of origin, etc.

Etua is the second form of tattoo design that have a stronger spiritual or magical representation.  Specific symbols show honor to certain tribes and can even offer protection from some gods.  The most popular symbolic tattoo designs throughout Polynesian history have been the gecko, turtle, dolphin and shark.

Gecko tattoo designs continue to be a popular choice today.  Although many people choose to have them created in bright vibrant colors, there are those that still favor the whimsical abstract shapes done in bold black ink.  Despite the fact that foreigners and missionaries attempted to abolish the rich cultural tradition of tattooing, Polynesian tattoo designs have managed to have a rebirth in popularity today.

The traditional green gecko is the most popular chosen tattoo design, occasionally portrayed with spot on its body.  Due to its large dark eyes, it is often created to be cartoon-like and even in many other colors.  Leopard geckos are also common choices and have a much more colorful and pronounced pattern while the Crested gecko is loved for its golden hue that it offers.

Gecko tattoo designs are almost always in their natural crawling position, climbing up an arm, leg, back or chest or they may be twisted into a crescent moon shape.  Often they are even depicted on a flower or stem, molding into the color.

Sometimes people choose their gecko tattoo to appear lighthearted and placed in fun settings like on the beach, surfboard or wearing sunglasses.  These symbolical little creatures can be designed to be as unique as the wearer and are the perfect addition to a larger tattoo or ideal for a discreet tattoo.  Gecko tattoo designs are very versatile and adaptable just like the creature itself.

The art of tattoo designs continue to emerge along with the human race development. It is not possible to decipher when the first tattoo presented itself but it is believed to be more than 30,000 years ago.

Numerous Egyptian mummies have been found in pyramids displaying wrist tattoos. The women were believed to have been longing for a child and the tattoos were meant to act as a symbol fertility. Some reports suggest that tattoos may have served a medicinal purpose as the pigment had some type of curative or healing effect. It is also interesting to note that the word tattoo comes from the Polynesian word of “ta” that means to strike something.

A mummy known by the name of Oetzi was found in 1991 that was believed to be 5,300 years old that displayed vertical and horizontal lined tattoos. At least 57 markings were found on various joints on his body. The tattoos were believed to be a form of acupuncture that was administered to be a reliever of joint pain. These are the same pressure points that are used in acupuncture today. There is, however, some speculation that the markings could have been a representation of a ritual or social status.

Russians found bodies that they believed to be more that 2,400 years old. They had therapeutic dots that lined up all along their spinal column as well as around their right ankle. It is because of tattoos like these that historians have been able to attain important information of the Neolithic ages.

Flower tattoo designs are one of the most popular natural subjects for tattoo art.  Flowers are colorful, beautiful and they offer individual symbolic meanings.  They can be portrayed as the elegant and graceful pieces of nature that they are all alone or paired up with virtually any design, symbol or word.

Flowers grow almost everywhere in the world, in some of the most extreme weather conditions.  They are known by all so it is no surprise that they have been used almost as long as tattoos have existed.  It is more than evident the fascination that the world has had with floral designs through the explicit showmanship on tattoos.

Hawaiian flowers are popular in tattoos because of their exotic beauty.  Many people will get them as a remembrance of what a fabulous and unforgettable time they had on the island.  Plumeria, hibiscus and orchids are among the most common picked.  Plumeria and orchids symbolize thoughtfulness, beauty, wisdom and love.  They are often combined with tribal and are almost always placed on the lower back or part of a full back piece.

For women that want to break away from traditional flowers, the lotus flower is a popular choice.  They are usually designed with brilliant color that makes them stand out and often enhanced with water, vines and symbols.  In the Hindu and Buddhist culture, the lotus represents a symbolic journey of an individual’s soul to enlightenment.  Today the lotus is a symbol of power, beauty, change, strength and the journey of the soul.

Japanese flower tattoo designs are widely used as well.  Sakura, or the cherry blossom is one of the most popular designs along with the azalea and plum blossom.

Gothic Tattoo Designs

Sample Gothic Tattoo Click Image For More Designs

It is often assumed and proclaimed that Gothic tattoo designs were developed from the cultural movement that took place in the United States and Europe in the late 1970s. However the Gothic lifestyle was inspired by Medieval times. Most people think that Goths are all fascinated with the occult and death but not all of them are into that. It is also important to note that most often they are artistic, highly creative people that usually hold an above average intelligence.

Gothic art came along with Gothic architecture as part of the Medieval movement that began in the 12th century and lasted until the 16th century with the birth of the renaissance movement. The transition that occurred from Romanesque isn’t quite precise but what is known is that the word Gothic, in reference to art often was a synonym for barbaric. Gothic sculptures were born on walls of buildings and cathedrals and religious art was made use of to offer narrative stories.

Black letter, also called Gothic Script was used through Western Europe. It also is often referred to as Old English and is, itself broken down into many categories of writing. All of which are commonly used for Gothic script tattoos.

Medieval Times gave birth to mythological stories of dragons and fairies that were reborn with the Gothic movement in the 70s and 80s. Brilliant musical artists played off these ancient stories as inspiration to create a new type of Goth that brought plenty of black clothing, leather, lace, chains and of course, Gothic tattoo designs.

Those who have adopted the Goth culture are generally imaginative and eclectic with these two attributes radiating in the presence of their chosen tattoos. One category of these tattoos is represented by fantasy images of dragons, fairies and other medieval beings. They are usually linked to the fairy-tale world.

The second category that Gothic tattoos covers are those linked to the occult. Images of Wicca, Tarot and Runes including the pentacle, athame or symbols representing the four elements are common. Occult crafts are not necessarily evil, nor do they have to have anything to do with Satanism. Many of these ancient religions were practiced until Christianity chased them underground. Gothic tattoo designs celebrate these images.

There is a good portion of Gothic subculture that represents the darker side of romance. Death, mystical forces and esoteric subjects make for rich and detailed art forms for tattoos. Popular fantasy Gothic tattoo designs are dragons, griffons, pixies and fairies.

There are several types of people that make up the Goth culture and some are definitely affiliated with the dark side, holding deep interest in the occult. Defined, occult means “hidden” therefore, it can describe a varied assortment of things. It can be just a casual infatuation with vampires to an alternative religion practice of Wicca or white magic.

Not all goths carry an interest at all in the occult so it is ignorant to assume that they all dabble in some form of arcane religious practices. Those that are associated, generally choose images of pentagrams, vampires, druidic symbols, Wicca imagery or tarot cards for their tattoo designs.

Since the 70s birth of Gothic subculture was so influenced by music, it only makes sense that many tattoos are from music, films and television programs. Popular popculture tattoos are band names or logos and images from Gothic films or books.

Many of the aesthetic influences over Gothic culture are traced back to Medieval Times. For example, the Egyptian ankh is common to see on a Goth. Romantic literature and architecture from the late 18th century had a heavy influence on Goth today. Black and gray tattoos are popular of Gothic cathedrals, crosses, ruined castles, Egyptian imagery and historical literary figures.

Gothic tattoo designs are as diverse as the people that make up the community. Some choose to make an explosive statement with plenty of vibrant colors while others stick with black. Gothic tattoos are as unique as the people that display them.
