Star tattoo designs are equally as popular and meaningful for men and women. There are a number of variations of these types of tattoos that all have their own metaphysical or symbolic meaning. The star is one of the first significant images and oldest symbols in many religions and they have always been quite awe inspiring as they are things that humans have no control over. Before modern times, people would look to the sky as guidance and they hold an important value in many mythological stories.

Sailors are believed to be the first group of people to put a meaning behind and get nautical star tattoos. Sailors were and still are superstitious and have always looked to the skies to seek out the North Star to find their way home. GPS was non-existent but if a sailor could determine direction by the stars then he could steer his ship the right way. The North Star became a significant symbol so sailors would get a nautical star tattoo for good luck to find their way home.

Various groups of people have adopted the star as their significant symbol. Of course, sailors are still smitten with the traditionalism of the nautical star but so are certain divisions of the military. Many military personnel choose a star tattoo as the superstitious belief that it wilt guide them home.

Of course star tattoo designs can be a symbol of just finding your way in life. This meaning was offered by Sailor Jerry, one of the most well known tattoo artists and the idea was endorsed by the punk movement. Many alternative band members have sleeve tattoos with nautical stars incorporated somewhere in them, often on the elbow.
